Message from Mdm Carragher:

Parents of Grade 5/6,

In your child's FSL class, we have been corresponding with a class in Chalon-sur-Saone, France in (eastern France, south of  Dijon).  Each student has a pen pal from that class and we have written back and forth at least 4-5 times this year.  All emails have been sent from the teacher's email, never the students.

Their teacher, Mme Lesouder, has asked if  some of our students would like to continue the correspondence by personal mail/email over the summer and on.  If you would like to do this, please email me or contact me for more information.

Island of the Blue Dolphins, By Scott O'Dell

February 1st- Book Handout.  Students have adopted a novel and are tasked with the responsibility of keeping the book safe from damage, and to use the book to gain some important understandings.

Two Big Tasks:
1:  How is humanity affected by the actions of others and by ourselves?  How can humanity overcome adversity and teach us important lessons about ourselves?
2:  How can studying vocabulary from this novel help me grow as a reader and consumer of literature?

Important Dates:
Due February 13
  • Part 1 Chapters 1-9. Pg. 1-58 (58 pages)
Due February 26
  • Part 2 Chapters 10-19 (65 pages)
Due March 11
  • Part 3 Chapters 20-29 (56 pages)
Students are encouraged to make a reading plan in their agenda, to help them manage the chapters that have been assigned.

Students will be asked to complete Vocabulary Previews before they read. They are to self-manage this task and ensure that all previews are completed.

Students will also be asked to complete certain Chapter Vocabulary Activities. Not all students will complete the same assignments, they will be given according to student need.

If Governments Disappeared

Welcome to January!  In Social Studies we are beginning our look at provincial and local governments, and how where a person lives affects the kinds of services they might require from their governments.

January 5th
We began our unit with this question:

If our governments disappeared overnight, would your life be better or worse?

Your child will come home with this question for you to consider together.  They will share some of their thinking from class, and get your opinion to add to our class discussion. Thank you for your participation and your thoughts on this topic.
